Frequently asked questions.
What happens in the first session?
Our first session will be a structured Intake Assessment. Think of it as a snapshot of your story: we’ll explore the key experiences and themes that have shaped you into who you are today. From there, we’ll identify your goals for therapy, which will help guide our future work together.
How long is a session?
Each therapy session is 60 minutes long.
How do I choose a therapist?
Finding the right therapist is a personal and sometimes gradual process. It’s important to consider both the therapist’s style and how comfortable and understood you feel with them. This is why having a free consultation before booking a full session can be so valuable. It gives you a chance to meet the therapist, ask questions, and get a feel for whether you might work well together.
How often do I need to go to therapy?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, and I’m happy to help you determine what frequency of sessions works best for you. Some people attend weekly, others biweekly, and some shift to monthly check-ins over time. Your ideal frequency depends on your goals, availability, and circumstances. That said, attending more regularly at the beginning of therapy can be helpful. It allows us to establish a strong foundation and begin deeper work in a supportive and consistent way.
How long will I be in therapy before I see change?
The length of time someone stays in therapy, and when they start to notice change, varies from person to person. It depends on a number of factors, including your goals, the nature of what you're working through, and your level of commitment to the process. Some people see therapy as a short-term support system, while others make therapy a long-term part of their self-care routine.
Progress in therapy is often linked not just to what happens in session, but also to the effort and reflection that happens between sessions. Being open to growth, practicing new tools, and staying engaged in the process can all support meaningful change.
Throughout our work together, I can help you track your progress and reflect on your growth. This can help you decide if you’d like to continue therapy at the same pace, take a break, or space out sessions over time, depending on what feels right for you.
What does therapy look like with you?
My approach to therapy is collaborative and client-centered. In our sessions, we’ll work together to identify what you need and how I can best support you. This often starts with talk therapy and may include more psychoeducation and skill-building. As we uncover more about your needs, we may move into experiential work, such as somatic work, inner child exploration, body scans, dialoguing with the inner critic, and more. I aim to create a space that feels safe, compassionate, and tailored to you.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is a vital part of building trust in therapy. Everything we discuss stays between us, with a few legal and ethical exceptions:
If there is reason to believe someone is at risk of serious harm
In cases of child or elder abuse
If required by a court subpoena
We can talk more about these limits in our sessions, so you feel fully informed and supported.
Is therapy covered by insurance? If so, do you offer direct billing?
Many insurance plans cover services by Registered Psychotherapists. The best first step is to check your policy for details about coverage.
I don’t currently offer direct billing, but I will provide you with a receipt after each session, which you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
Can Registered Psychotherapists diagnose or prescribe medication?
No, Registered Psychotherapists do not diagnose or prescribe medication. Psychologists, psychiatrists, and some family doctors are qualified to assess for diagnosis. Psychiatrists and many physicians can prescribe medications. That said, I can support you in understanding a diagnosis, adjusting to medications, or exploring therapeutic tools to manage symptoms.
